Camden Hills State Park

If you came to Camden, you better have packed more than just flip-flops. The Camden Hills offer some of the most scenic strolls in Maine, whether you decide to tackle the steep half-mile hike up Mount Battie (the trail starts at the end of Megunticook Street, shown at the point of the marker on the map) or prefer the more gentle walks to be found on the waterside of Route 1. More ambitious hikers will do well to plan on a couple of days, at least, to allow time to explore Mount Megunticook through the Maiden’s Cliff and Ocean Lookout trails, while less athletic boaters might decide to hitch a ride up the auto road to Mount Battie’s summit. No matter how you get there, you absolutely must make it to this 800-foot-high scenic overlook, which offers one of the most stunning views of Mount Desert Island in the east to Monhegan in the south.
