A Day at the Races

The breeze didn’t completely cooperate at the 2011 Intercollegiate Offshore Regatta, held Columbus Day Weekend in Larchmont, NY, but that didn’t keep the young sailors from making the event memorable.

During the two-day event (which was won by the team from Maine Maritime Academy), thirty HD Flip video cameras were made available so that each sailing team had the opportunity to document as much action as possible onboard their boats and dockside before and after racing. Once the regatta had concluded, the footage, which totaled over 50 hours, was uploaded to a server, and each team was challenged to turn the collective work into a short video that would best capture the atmosphere of the event.

The envelope, please. (Drumroll)

The winner of the video contest is Villanova University, with sophomore Scott Barnhill (Baltimore, MD) serving as video editor. Villanova will receive a $1,500 donation made out to its sailing team.

The footage is hardly the stuff you might see coming from the deck of a Volvo 70 off Cape Town, but in a way it’s better. If you want a candid look at tomorrow’s sailing stars, check out this video.
