Newport Crew Strong in Brutal Volvo Race

The Newport-based crew of Puma’s Mar Mostro is looking strong as they hold onto second place in a brutal Leg 5 of the Volvo Ocean Race, from Auckland, New Zealand, to Itajai, Brazil. The leg has seen plenty of casualties so far: the crew of Abu Dhabi Ocean Racing was forced back to port shortly after the start to repair damage, Team Sanya is enroute back to New Zealand with a broken rudder, and the New Zealand-based crew of Camper is detouring to Chile to repair damage to their yacht’s bow.

The “Roaring Forties” are living up to their reputation as one of the most fearsome places in the world to sail, and this incredible video from on board Telefonica demonstrates just how gnarly the conditions can be.
